There are important changes to federal and state tax laws this year that owners of small businesses need to know about, and a seminar taking place in Bay Ridge on Jan. 29 is designed to provide the latest information, organizers said.

The seminar, “Federal and New York State Tax Law Updates for Small Business Owners,” is being presented by the Staten Island Small Business Development Center and will take place on Thursday, Jan. 29, at the Bay Ridge Manor, 476 76th St., from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The seminar is free.

Brooklyn business owners who are unable to attend the Jan. 29 seminar can catch it a week earlier on Staten Island. A seminar will take place on Thursday, Jan. 22, in Recital Hall at the College of Staten Island, 2800 Victory Boulevard, from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Both presentations are jointly sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service, the College of Staten Island and the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The speakers will include certified public accountants Warren Bergstein and Jack Gold of Adelman, Katz and Mond LLP.

“Having a grasp of the latest tax changes is vitally important to anyone who operates a business or professional practice,” said Dean Balsamini, director of the Staten Island Small Business Development Center. “This seminar sheds light on updates they need to know about.”

In addition to tax updates, there will also be a discussion on tax filing for the Affordable Care Act, tax planning for the future, new property regulations and the business aspects of hiring independent contractors.

For more information or to pre-register for either presentation, call Christine Purelis of the Small Business Development Center at 718-982-2560 or email her at [email protected].
