Best-selling author kicks it with Kearney

Novelist, writer and film director Adriana Trigiani may have grown up in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, but her favorite place in the world is Brooklyn, New York.

On Wednesday, December 3 the New York Times bestselling author found herself center-stage at Bishop Kearney High School where she spoke to students, faculty and dedicated fans (“Adriatics”) about life, love and how to keep on keeping on.

“Anybody who’s ever been in Brooklyn is the hippest cat in the world,” Trigiani said before delving into everything from her best-selling books and her latest ventures to life, loss, connectedness and what it means to be true to you.

“You have to know what’s right for you, and what’s right for you isn’t always what’s right for the person next to you,” she said. “You have to listen to that little voice inside of you. You have to listen to your conscience, and most importantly, you have to make decisions based on what makes you comfortable.”

Her bestseller, Big Stone Gap, just made the jump to the silver screen with big names like Whoopi Goldberg, Patrick Wilson and Ashley Judd on the roster. Most famous for penning The Shoemaker’s Wife and Lucia, Lucia (a book most Kearney girls in the audience had already read for class), Trigiani has also been noted as a writer for “The Cosby Show” and its spin-off series “A Different World.”

The writer was brought to tears when an “Adriatic” in the audience told her that she traveled from out-of-state to hear her speak and that she was her mother’s favorite author. The Adriatic’s mother had recently died and, Trigiani made that fan a promise.

“I will name a character after your mother,” she said to the room, emotions on high.

Trigiani’s talk concluded with a meet-and-greet as she signed copies of her best-sellers for eager fans and the Bishop Kearney High School family.
