It’s been a difficult time this Christmas season for the Salvation Army at Bay Ridge, as the nonprofit organization’s holiday donations – collected during the annual Kettle Drive — are down 31 percent from the same time last year right here in the neighborhood.

Because of the steep decline and Christmas rapidly approaching, the Salvation Army’s Bay Ridge Corps has made an appeal for addition donations. The goal for this year is $29,000. By the time of the appeal, Wednesday, December 10, the group was nearly $5,000 behind where they should have been at that time.

The fundraiser just doesn’t help holiday donations, but also afterschool programs, music lessons, a summer camping programs, local food pantries and other causes.

“We’re grateful to those who have supported this year’s campaign so far,” stated Lieutenant Joel Ashcraft, corps officer at the Salvation Army in Bay Ridge. “Our donors have been very faithful to us for many years, and I’m confident they’ll come through again when word gets out that the kettle contributions are trailing behind last year.”

The campaign runs Tuesdays through Saturday outside Food Dynasty at 75th Street and Third Avenue, Century 21 at 86th and 87th Streets between Fourth and Fifth Avenues, and Foodtown at Third Avenue and 91st Street.

During the weekends, stands are set up outside Radio Shack at 86th Street and Fifth Avenue, Fifth Avenue and 75th Street, 18th Avenue and 86th Street and 87th Street and Fourth Avenue. The drive ends on Christmas Eve, December 24.

Those interested can also make online donation at www.onlineredkettle.org/BayRidgeSA. Donations can also be made by sending a check to The Salvation Army at 252 86th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11209.
