ON THIS DAY in 1916, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Ackron Gets Life Term; Schloer, Too.” The article focused on a notorious dive keeper and swindler, Charles Ackron, who was sentenced to prison for life.

“‘Ackron, I sentence you to imprisonment for the term of your natural life!’” the Eagle reported a judge saying to the convict.  “As County Judge Dike today thus sealed the doom of Charles E. Ackron, one of the most notorious dive keepers, swindlers and bad men who ever infested New York City, a gasp escaped from the crowd which packed Part I of the County Court House.”
