Canarsie and Seddio light up Canarsie for tradition holiday display

Let it glow!

As another holiday season began, hundreds of Brooklynites gathered at the intersection of Flatlands Avenue and East 93rd Street on Sunday, December 7 to spread cheer despite the chilly opening night of the Canarsie Annual Christmas Display, a tradition that began in 1963.

As always, the house where Kings County Democratic Chair Frank Seddio has his law office was the main event, displaying more than 500,000 lights, around 100 animated dolls, a talking Christmas tree, a four-foot parrot and much more.

“This is the best of the 28 years we have done the display, with the addition of live animals that kids had a wonderful time feeding at the nativity scene,” said Seddio.

Seddio, clad in a Santa cap, oversaw the event, which attracted not only area residents but numerous dignitaries in to celebrate with attendees.

Among the highlights of the elaborate display are Smurfs skating along the front lawn, famous Disney characters such as Mickey and Minnie Mouse and the Winter Wizard, who recites “The Night before Christmas.” In addition, there are displays reflecting Chanukah and Kwanzaa.

Of course, there wouldn’t be a Christmas celebration without Santa and his trusty elves, who were on hand at the festive event to spread holiday cheer.

For the opening night festivities, Christmas tunes were performed by the P.S. 115 chorus and the choir of Mary Queen of Heaven. Carols were also played on steel drums by the “Pan Fusion” Steel Band.

Construction for the massive holiday display is done by volunteers. Most years, it takes the entire month of November to complete. If you missed the opener, the lights will remain on display until the New Year.

Although attendees are enjoying the festive site, Settio is already planning how to top it in the future. “Now we have to think how we can make it look better next year.”
