ON THIS DAY in 1908, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Elephant on Rampage; Was Scared by a Pig.”

The article focused on an elephant belonging to the Hippodrome Theatre dashing out into the streets of Manhattan.  

“Frightened by a small pig and its new surroundings, an elephant belonging to the Hippodrome dashed across the stage this morning, and smashing its way through a door, got into West Forty-Third Street, Manhattan, and went to Fifth Avenue,” the Eagle reported.

TODAY IS BLACK FRIDAY.  Black Friday marks the traditional beginning of the holiday shopping season on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

ANNA NICOLE SMITH was born on this day in 1967.  Born as Vickie Lynn Hogan, the model and actress earned a certain degree of fame for appearing in Playboy and marrying an 89-year-old billionaire.  The cause of her death, the paternity and custody of her infant daughter and the disposition of her estate were all subjects of interest by the tabloid and mainstream media.  She died in 2007.

The event celebrates local, independent bookstores.
