ON THIS DAY in 1909, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Hammerstein Files Plan for Opera House on Bedford Avenue.” The article focused on a new structure would begin to be constructed within that year.  The architect was a Brooklynite.

“Plans have just been filed on the Bureau of Buildings for Oscar Hammerstein’s new opera house on Bedford Avenue at Grant Square…” the Eagle reported.  “It will have the largest auditorium in Brooklyn, seating 874 more than the Academy of Music, and its construction will be on the most elaborate scale.”
