Basketball fans in Brooklyn got a jolt of good news Monday afternoon when the NCAA announced that its 2016 mens basketball tournament will have first and second round games hosted at the Barclays Center.

The country becomes entranced every year by March Madness and Brooklyn will have a large part in the proceedings for the very first time.

“March Madness comes to Brooklyn! We are excited to host one of the world’s greatest sporting events in a venue that has become the center of college basketball on the East Coast,” said Barclays Center CEO Brett Yormark. “I would like to thank Mark Emmert, Mark Lewis, Scott Barnes, Dan Gavitt, and Andy Arnold for showing the NCAA’s commitment to Barclays Center and to Brooklyn. I also want to thank the Atlantic 10 and its Commissioner Bernadette McGlade for their partnership through this process. In just two years, Barclays Center has welcomed the most exciting and talked about events in sports and entertainment and the NCAA Tournament will be another celebrated moment for the borough.”

The Barclays Center has made college basketball a top priority since it opened and hosts preseason tournaments and the Atlantic 10 conference tournament each year. In 2017 and 2018, Barclays Center will host the ACC conference tournament.
