ON THIS DAY in 1919, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Lenin’s Appeal May Be Part of Evidence Against Local Reds.”

The article focused on a Bolshevist leader who wrote to American workingmen.  His letter was published in Brooklyn.

“Interest in the crusade against radicals shifted to Brooklyn today where five men were arraigned in the Williamsburg Plaza Police Court at 7 o’clock this afternoon as alleged anarchists,” the Eagle reported.  

“These men were captured in the dragnet which was spread last week in Brooklyn.”

CLAUDE MONET was born on this day in 1840.  Monet was a French impressionist painter known for his work Water Lilies. He died in 1926.

WILLIAM STEIG, Brooklyn native cartoonist, satirist and illustrator, was born on this day in 1907.  The New Yorker published more than 1,600 of his drawings, and he wrote more than 25 books for children.  He died in 2003.

AARON COPLAND, Brooklyn native composer, was born on this day in 1900.  Copland was known for incorporating American folk music, striving to create an American music style that was both popular and artistic.  He died in 1990.

A CYBER SECURITY COMPETITION will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the Downtown Brooklyn NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering (6 MetroTech Center Gymnasium).  The event includes workshops, keynote speakers and more.

FREE FALL, Jessica Gaynor Dance’s latest work, will take place at 8 p.m. today at the Muriel Schulman Theater.  The performance includes pieces that utilize “kinetic physicality, intricate patterning and formal structures.”

BROOKLYN WRITERS SPACE will be featured at 7 p.m. on Saturday at BookCourt.  The event includes a reading and book signing.  Scott Adkins is the host, and Jenny Halper, Rachael Stark, Alizah Salario and Dominic Preziosi will read.
