I have an employee who comes late to work every single day. I don’t know what to do with her anymore. She has been with the company a long time, and I don’t know what to do about it.

Dear Josh,

First, I want to ask you how badly you need this employee. Is her productivity worth the aggravation she causes you? If the answer is no, then you need to have a serious talk with yourself.

Some employees become very comfortable with their job and start slacking because their boss allows it to happen. First, it’s sporadic or once in a while and then it becomes a habit.

A bad habit is not easy to break. It is grandfathered in because you never said anything in the past. I don’t mean you didn’t ask her to be on time; I mean you have allowed it for too long.

The only way out of this situation is usually to let that person go. The reason behind letting them go is actually to set an example for anybody else in the company, making sure everybody understands that if they behave like she did that they will also lose their job.

If you don’t do this, it will only cause you more aggravation because nothing will change. There are plenty of qualified devoted employees looking for jobs right now; there are plenty of good people out there that are willing to be on time and to do right by you and your company.

Make sure that either way you’re in charge and that the failure or success of your company lies with you. Good luck!
