Tuesday, September 23 saw the highest single-day ridership levels in the history of the New York City subway, announced the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).

Four days in September saw levels pass six million riders, with September 23 logging 6,106,694 people.

MTA CEO Thomas Prendergast said increased ridership highlights the need for the MTA Capital Program to fund subway improvements.
