Greetings, Brooklyn.  Today is the 300th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY in 1908, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Chanler in Brooklyn Talks to Business Men.” The article focused on a Democratic candidate who talked with a crowd at the Real Estate Exchange, where he was asked about prosperity.

“Lieutenant Governor Chanler paid Brooklyn a flying visit this afternoon… where a crowd had gathered to welcome him,” the Eagle reported.  “The Democratic candidate plainly showed the effects of his campaigning and his voice was decidedly husky.”

THE FIRST OF THE 85 “Federalist” papers appeared in print in a New York City newspaper on this day in 1787.  The essays, written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay, argued in favor of adoption of the new Constitution.  The last essay was completed in 1788.

THE NEW YORK CITY subway began operation on this day in 1904.  It was privately operated by the Interborough Rapid Transit Company and ran from City Hall to W 145th Street.
