Another year, another successful Narrows Botanical Garden Fall Harvest

With canines in costume and pumpkins a-plenty, Bay Ridgeites came together on Sunday, October 12 for a fun-filled tradition as the Narrows Botanical Garden hosted its annual Fall Harvest Festival.

The weather cooperated with a beautiful day that included activities for the entire family. For adults, there were square dancing, raffles, local arts and crafts shopping. Children were able to enjoy arts and crafts, sweet treats, a pumpkin patch and face painting.

Man’s best friend headlined the day in the annual Canine Costume Contest. Dozens of owners dressed up their beloved pups in creative costumes in hopes of winning the first place prize of $50.

“There were a lot of dogs participating this year,” said attendee Anna D. “My favorite were three dogs dressed as Ninja Turtles. They were so cute. We had a wonderful time.”

“You couldn’t have gotten a better day of weather for it,” added John Quaglione, deputy chief of staff for State Senator Marty Golden. “It was so successful that they ran out of pumpkins for the kids. My daughter got her face painted so she’s a happy camper. It’s a great chance to get out of the house and see that the Narrows Botanical Gardens is really a beautiful hidden treasure here on Shore Road.”

Locals have a made it a point to visit the festival every year. “It’s a wonderful event. I love decorating the pumpkins the most and buying some of the local homemade stuff. We come every year. It’s definitely a great tradition,” said resident Peter G.

“We’ve come before. I love checking out the different vendors. It’s great to be able to have people come out. A lot of the times, we just stay in our own apartments. So to come out and enjoy the day, it’s great,” added Anthony James.

Along with regular attendees, people from out of state also attended the shindig and were impressed with the festive atmosphere. “This is absolutely great. I’m here from Michigan visiting my granddaughter. It’s her birthday. This is our post birthday party outing and we’re having a ball. I love the music. I’ve been here many times,” said Fred B.

“I know people that had plans to go away this weekend for Columbus Day,” added Quaglione. “They got mad that they missed this. It attracts families and it’s a highlight of the fall season.”
