Throughout the NFL this past weekend, players wore pink accents on their uniforms and equipment for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Additionally, the league honored breast cancer survivors on the field at halftime at stadiums across the country. Also observing this tribute to strong women have been two local high school teams right here in Bay Ridge – Fontbonne Hall Academy and Fort Hamilton High School.

This fall’s annual girls Catholic high school fall softball tournament was held at Our Lady of Grace Field and was organized by Fontbonne Head Coach Frank Marinello. In addition to Fontbonne and St. Edmund’s Prep from Brooklyn, St. Francis Prep and Archbishop Molloy from Queens were also participants. Taking advantage of the good weather and large turnout of supporters, Marinello and the Bonnies were able to collect $1,200 for “The Cure.”

During Fort Hamilton’s game with Truman this past weekend, Conner Fitzsimons wore his “pink” proudly for his mother Caroline with the words, “My mom survived” written on the pink eye-black patches just above his cheeks. Diagnosed in back in March, Fitzsimons’s mom recently received the welcome news this September that her chemotherapy treatments had been successful.

After Fort Hamilton’s win over Truman, junior quarterback Conner Fitzsimons posed with his dad, Eddie and his mom, Caroline, a recent cancer survivor.
