The state approved 17 new charter schools – 14 of them for Success Academy, three for Achievement First – for New York City and now the city will have to decide where to put them.

The charter schools are approved for placement in 14 public school districts, including Brooklyn’s Districts 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 22 and 23. That includes neighborhoods such as Brooklyn Heights, Brownsville, Carroll Gardens, Crown Heights, Ditmas Park, East Flatbush, Greenpoint, Marine Park, Mill Basin, Ocean Hill, Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Sunset Park, and Williamsburg.

It is too early to tell whether the new charters will be co-located into existing public school buildings or if the city will subsidize their rent in privately held spaces, as Governor Andrew Cuomo listed as an alternative in anew state law.
