ON THIS DAY in 1911, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Rear-Admiral Schley Stricken in Street; He Dies Immediately.”  The article focused on a naval officer who passed away.  “Rear Admiral Winfield Scott Schley dropped dead shortly after 1 o’clock today near the corner of 44th Street and Fifth Avenue, Manhattan,” the Eagle reported.  “The Admiral died before medical aid could reach him.”

NOTABLE PEOPLE born on this day include Brooklyn-born “The Sopranos” actress Lorraine Bracco, who was born in 1955; fashion designer Donna Karan, who was born in 1948; singer and songwriter Don McLean, who was born in 1945; movie critic Rex Reed, who was born in 1939; television host Kelly Ripa, who was born in 1970; singer and songwriter Sting, who was born in 1951; and motorcycle designer and “American Chopper” television personality Paul Teutul Jr., who was born in 1974.

MOHANDAS KARAMCHAND Gandhi was born on this day in 1869.  The Indian political and spiritual leader achieved world honor for his advocacy of nonviolent resistance as a weapon against tyranny.  He was assassinated in the garden of his New Delhi home in 1948.

“PEANUTS” debuted on this day in 1950.  The comic strip by Charles Schulz featured Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, Sally and Charlie’s dog, Snoopy.  The last new “Peanuts” strip was published in 2000.

A SOBIESKI VODKA and Pierogi Party will take place at 7 p.m. today at Karczma in Greenpoint.  This event is in honor and a preview of National Pierogi Day, which is on Oct. 8.  

SACKETT STREET WRITERS’ Workshop will be featured at BookCourt at 7 p.m. tonight.  The event includes a reading and book signing and will feature Erika Anderson, Joseph Riipi, Austin Ratner and Thessaly LaForce.  

BROOKLYN BLACK TIE BALL will take place from 6:30 to 11 p.m. tonight at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 2 Promenade.  The event provides philanthropic support for the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy’s free programs.  See ticket prices at brooklynbridgepark.org.
