Police fatally shot a 47-year-old man during a confrontation inside a Kensington apartment building that also left a 51-year-old man dead from an accidental gunshot wound in addition to multiple stab wounds.

The incident took place inside an apartment at 820 Ocean Parkway at around 7:18 p.m. on Monday, September 29, when police responded to several 9-1-1 calls from other residents about hearing yelling and crying children.

Upon entering apartment 714, officers encountered Francisco Carvajal, who was armed with a knife, as well as Rafael Laureano, the female resident’s boyfriend, who had visible stab wounds.

“After ordering the suspect to drop the knife multiple times, police discharged their firearms, striking the armed individual, [who] was pronounced dead at the scene,” said the NYPD in a statement.

The injured Laureano was rushed to Maimonides Medical Center, where he died.

It was first reported that he died of stab wounds, but it turned out that he died from a bullet wound from the crossfire exchanged between police and the suspect.

Katarzyna Russo, 35, and her two children, aged six and seven, were inside the apartment, locked in a bathroom that the suspect had been attempting to break into. They had called Laureano for help and remained unharmed.

Three police officers were treated at Maimonides for tinnitus – a ringing in the ears that commonly occurs following the discharge of firearms.

Two knives were recovered at the scene.
