Culture Briefs: Murder mysteries, silent films and Bobby McFerrin

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY

Join the Brooklyn Public Library on Wednesday, October 1 at 6:30 p.m. for a free screening of the 1933 American mystery film, “The Kennel Murder Case.”

Watch on from the Central Library’s Dweck Center (10 Grand Army Plaza) as debonair detective Philo Vance sniffs out intrigue at The Long Island Kennel Club. With the aid of a Doberman, Vance solves the locked-room murder of a prominent and much-hated collector whose broken Chinese vase provides an important clue.

“The Kennel Murder Case,” directed by Michael Curtis, runs for one hour and 13 minutes. The screening is part of the Brooklyn Public Library film series, Detectives: Good, Bad, and Ugly, hosted and curated by Glenn Kenny.

SILENT FILM SERIES

The Brooklyn Public Library will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the debut of Charlie Chaplin’s tramp character on film in 1914 with a special Silent Film Series. The Central Library (10 Grand Army Plaza) will host a free screening of Charlie Chaplin shorts on Sunday, October 5 at 1 p.m.

The series will showcase the 1915 short “Police” (26 minutes), the 1917 short “Easy Street” (24 minutes featuring live piano accompaniment by Makia Matsumura), and the 1918 short “A Dog’s Life” (35 minutes with music composed by Chaplin on the soundtrack).

While the event is free, it is only offered to ages six and up. The Silent Film Series is sponsored by Los Blancos. For more information on the series, hosted and curated by Ken Gordon and held in the Dweck Center, visit www.bklynpubliclibrary.org.

DON’T WORRY, BE HAPPY

The Brooklyn Center for Performing Arts at Brooklyn College will kick off its 60th anniversary season with a special concert performance by 10-time Grammy Award winner Bobby McFerrin, best known for his chart-topping single, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” on Saturday, November 1 at 8 p.m.

Tickets for this one-night-only event are $36-$60 and can be purchased at www.brooklyncenter.org or by calling the box office at 718-951-4500 (Open Tuesday through Saturday from 1 to 6 p.m.).
