Public and private buildings will go green by 2050, according to a plan by Mayor Bill de Blasio, which aims to see an 80 percent cut in the city’s greenhouse gas emissions via installation of energy efficient appliances and infrastructure.

Around 3,000 schools, firehouses, hospitals and other city-owned buildings will be affected, and private property owners will be encouraged – possibly via legal measures – also to follow these standards.

The plan was announced on the same day that over 400,000 people peacefully flooded city streets for the People’s Climate March.
