The body of an elderly woman who went missing mid-August was found on Thursday, September 11 on the roof of a Coney Island apartment building.

The body, though badly-decomposed, was found atop 2930 West 30th Street and is believed to be that of 74-year-old Cucita Alvarado, known to friends and family as “Lucy,” who went missing after leaving her Coney Island home on August 12.

“I am very sad to hear this terrible news, especially knowing how many loved ones have been searching for Lucy and praying for her return over the past few weeks. I send my truly heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Alvarado’s family and will continue pray for them and assist them in any way possible,” said Coney Island Councilmember Mark Treyger in a statement.

Alvarado, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease, was last seen walking near the building at West 31st Street and Mermaid Avenue where she lived. According to police, while looking for Alvarado, the entire building – including the roof – was scanned.

“Nobody should ever face the type of ordeal that Mrs. Alvarado’s family and friends endured over the past month,” stressed the councilmember, thanking those Coney Island residents that cared enough to continue the search for their neighbor.

According to reports, an elevator repairman discovered the body around 10 a.m. It was so badly decomposed that police were unable to identify the gender.

“We must come together now as a community to be there for this family as they grieve their loss, and work as a city to find ways to help prevent this from happening to any other families,” said Treyger.
