ON THIS DAY in 1905 the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “300 Able Policemen Let Off Night Duty.”  The article focused on the increase in Brooklyn crime after the police force decreased the number of officers on night duty.  The Eagle reported that 1,031 officers guarded Brooklyn at night in 1902, compared to the 731 in 1905.  “Commissioner McAdoo might possibly find a quick remedy for some of his troubles in the management of the police force if he would put a more efficient force of the $1,400 apiece patrolmen… at some useful employment,” the Eagle reported.
