To help kick off a month-long effort to help raise awareness of childhood cancer, Bay Ridge Go Gold – a joint effort to paint the town gold for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month – took to the streets with ribbons, lights and even gold yarn on Sunday, September 7 to show that there truly is strength in numbers.

A grassroots effort organized by local organization Bay Ridge Cares, Bay Ridge Go Gold is inviting everyone to light the neighborhood – from ribbons on street corners and posters in storefronts to wreaths on front doors and string lights in windows – gold and yellow for the entire month of September.

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Bay Ridge comes together like no place on Earth,” said Justin Brannan, co-founder of Bay Ridge Cares who, with helping hands across the nabe, took to the streets from Colonial Road to Fifth Avenue and beyond to go gold. “When it comes to a cause like this, we knew we needed to get involved. Some of us have been touched directly by pediatric cancer, others know someone who has – and we’re all here to support each other because that’s just how it’s done – that’s the Brooklyn way.”

From bake sales of gold cupcakes outside of Baby Mama to “yarn bombs” thanks to the Bookmark Shoppe and members of local knitting club “Sticks in the City,” Bay Ridge was truly transformed – all in the name of kids with cancer.

“These children, these families who are battling the unimaginable – every sign in a window, every bow around a tree, that sends a message: they are not alone,” said Brannan.

To cap off the month, Go Gold Bay Ridge will host a fundraising event on Thursday, September 27 at 2 p.m. at Saint Patrick’s Auditorium , located on the corner of 97th Street and Fourth Avenue. Admission is $20 per person and kids are free.

A portion of the proceeds from the event will be donated to the #WorldGoGold fund for pediatric cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
