Good morning, Brooklyn.  Today is the 247th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY in 1907, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Brooklyn Tunnel Being Reinforced.” The article focused on “secret” plans to extend work 2,000 feet on the Battery Tunnel.  
“The two cast iron tubes of the Battery Tunnel from Manhattan to Brooklyn have proved so weak and to have such possibilities of danger that it has been found necessary to strengthen them with a lining which is practically another tube inside each original cylinder of cast iron,” the Eagle reported.

THE FIRST ELECTRIC LIGHTING came in offices on Spruce, Wall, Nassau and Pearl streets in lower Manhattan on this day in 1882.  Thomas Edison hooked up light bulbs to an underground cable carrying direct-current electrical power.

THE LITTLE ROCK NINE incident occurred on this day in 1957.  Gov. Orval Faubus called the Arkansas National Guard to turn away nine black students who had attempted to attend Central High School in Little Rock.  President Eisenhower responded by sending the 101st Army Airborne to enforce the law that allowed the students to integrate the school.  On Sept. 25, national troops escorted the nine into the school.

LOS ANGELES was founded on this day in 1781.  Los Angeles was founded by decree and called “El Pueblos de Nuestra Senora La Reina de Los Angeles de Porciuncula.” The city of Los Angeles was incorporated on April 4, 1850.
