HAPPY BIRTHDAY, VERRAZANO

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority will kick off the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge’s 50th birthday bash with an exhibit at Historic Richmond Town. “Spanning the Narrows for Five Decades,” will feature historic photographs and artifacts and will open on Tuesday, August 19 at the Staten Island Historical Society (441 Clarke Avenue), running through the end of 2014.

A similar exhibit will open in Brooklyn’s New York Transit Museum (99 Schermerhorn Street) on Saturday, November 1, and will run through Monday, March 23, 2015. Additionally, the Transit Museum will host a book signing of author Gay Talese’s “The Bridge,” on Thursday, November 13 at 6:30 p.m.

On Friday, November 21, MTA officials will host an official ceremony with elected officials at the Overlook in Fort Wadsworth where United States Post Office officials will unveil an express mail stamp commemorating the bridge’s 50th anniversary – as well as a 50-shot cannon salute, 25 fired from each side of the bridge, and a fireboat water display visible from both the fort and Shore Road Park (79th Street and Shore Road in Bay Ridge).

GRADE-A ARTWORK

The Brooklyn Museum will host its Gallery/Study Program Exhibition Reception on Saturday, September 13 from 3 to 5 p.m. There, the museum will present an exhibition of artwork by students ages six through adult from the museum’s spring 2014 Gallery/Studio Program art classes.

Join the students – and teachers – in the Con Edison Education Gallery (located on the first floor of the museum, 200 Eastern Parkway) for the opening reception. Parents, friends, relatives and the public are welcome.

The event is free, and light refreshments will be served. For more information, visit www.brooklynmuseum.org.
