Pols push to light Unisphere gold

Brooklyn and Queens politicians hope to add the Unisphere in Flushing Meadows Corona Park to the list of public buildings and structures that Go Gold for one or more days in September, in honor of Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month.

The request was made in a letter to city Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver, stating, “We truly believe that the famous and spectacular globe presented during the 1964 World’s Fair would get the attention of the world.”

The letter was signed by State Senator Marty Golden, Congressmember Michael Grimm, Assemblymembers Alec Brook-Krasny and Nicole Malliotakis, and Councilmembers Vincent Gentile and Eric Ulrich.

The request is part of the Empire Go Gold and World Go Gold awareness campaigns, which has already seen city landmarks such as the Coney Island Parachute Jump, Times Square, One World Trade and Helmsley Building agree to light gold.
