ON THIS DAY in 1911, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Not Guilty, Says Beattie, In Answering Charge of Murdering Wife.”
The article focused on a trial that began to unravel as a man accused of murder officially plead not guilty.
“Standing by the side of his gray-haired father, Henry Clay Beattie Jr. of Richmond entered a plea of not guilty here today when arraigned in the Circuit Court on an indictment charging him with the murder of his young wife,” the article reported.  “He did not flinch as the clerk read the indictment, but stood with eyes lowered.  The father, beside him, sat with a bowed head.”
