Bay Ridge is becoming a yoga lover’s paradise!

A series of free yoga classes offered in Shore Road Park has drawn such enthusiastic crowds that the sponsors, Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis and state Sen. Marty Golden, have announced that they are adding two more dates to the schedule.

The yoga lessons will now extend into September, the lawmakers said. “We have been encouraged by the extremely positive response that these yoga classes in the park have received, and so we have made arrangements to offer two more classes.  September is still a beautiful time of the year in our parks, and with the start of school, and the end of summer, yoga can provide some much needed tranquil time,” Malliotakis and Golden said in a joint statement.

The series of outdoor classes, which are led by experienced yoga instructors, started in June. The lessons are held in hore Road Park at 79th Street.

Here is the new schedule: Tuesday, Aug. 12 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 30 at 9 a.m.; Monday, Sept. 8 at 6:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Sept. 21 at noon.

Participants learn the fundamentals of yoga and learn poses such as Warrior, Tree and Downward-Facing Dog. They also learn what Sun Salutations are.

Participants interested in taking a class should call Malliotakis’s office at 718-987-0197 or visit [email protected] to register. Residents can also register by calling Golden’s office at 718-238-6044.

Malliotakis, who has been practicing yoga since her college days, said it’s not only great exercise, but it can reduce stress as well. “It’s a great way to unwind. You learn to focus on your breathing and relax,” she told the Brooklyn Eagle in a recent interview.

The classes are primarily directed toward beginners, but there will be options for those who are more advanced. Participants are urged to bring a yoga mat or a towel and to arrive 15 minutes early to prepare for the lesson.
