Brooklyn Bridge Park unveils 14 design proposals for Pier 6

On Wednesday, the Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation released details of 14 different design proposals for residential development at two sites near Pier 6, at the foot of Atlantic Avenue.

The proposals were submitted in response to an RFP issued in May, and are intended to generate funding to maintain the park – an idea challenged by some local residents in a lawsuit attempting to block the towers.

Brooklyn Bridge Park, unlike other major parks in New York City, operates under a mandate to be financially self-sustaining.

The development includes two towers — one with a maximum height of 315 feet and housing 290 units, while the other with a height of up to 155 feet with up to 140 units. The development must also include 130,000 square feet – 30 percent — of affordable housing, with preference given to people from the nearby community.

Other requirements included creating “a vibrant new entrance to the park,” and contributing park amenities including public rest rooms.

The lawsuit has resulted in a temporary restraining order blocking Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation from signing off on a choice, though the group is scheduled to make a selection in the fall.

The designs will be discussed at a board meeting of the BBPC Wednesday afternoon.
