ANNE FRANK wrote her last entry in the “Diary of Anne Frank” on this day in 1944.  Frank was 13 when she started journaling her experiences of hiding in warehouses during World War II.  She hid with her Jewish family to escape deportation to concentration camps.  Her last entry wrote: “[I] keep on trying to find a way of becoming what I would like to be, and what I could be, if … there weren’t any other people living in the world.”  Three days later, Anne and her sister were sent to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where she died at age 15.

THE FIRST U.S. CENSUS was revealed on this day in 1790.  At the time, the U.S. population was 3,939,326 people in the 16 states.  The U.S. has taken a census every 10 years since then.

HERMAN MELVILLE was born on this day in New York City in 1819.  Melville is most famous for “Moby-Dick.”  The first sentence, “Call me Ismael,” is one of the most famous sentences in literature.

THE WORLD WIDE WEB was first suggested on this day in 1990 by Tim Berners-Lee and Robert Cailliau at CERN.  By October, they had designed a prototype browser.  The first graphical web browser, Mosaic, was released in 1993.

SPIDER-MAN DEBUTED on this day in 1962.  Stan Lee and Steve Ditko first introduced Spider-Man in the #15 issue of Amazing Fantasy.  The “spidey sense” hero got his own comic strip in March of 1963.

EVENTS AT Brooklyn Bridge Park today include a Youth Basketball Clinic and Hip-Hop Dance Aerobics class.  The basketball clinic will take place at the basketball courts from 2 to 3 p.m.  The aerobics class will take place at the pier 2 promenade at 7 p.m.

ON THIS DAY in 1911, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Says Astor Will Wed Madeline T. Force, Ex-Brooklyn Girl.” The article focused on the wealthy Colonel John Jacob Astor and his engagement to a wealthy ex-Brooklynite.  “The Force family is well known in Brooklyn, formerly having a residence on Remsen Street,” the article reported.  “Mr. Force is head of the extensive sipping and forwarding firm of Will H. Force & Co….”
