BERENICE ABBOTT, a photographer known for her 1930s New York City black-and-white photographs, was born on this day in 1898.  After her photographs were published in “Changing New York,” Abbott went on to photographing scientific experiments.  She died in 1991.

DISNEYLAND OPENED on this day in 1955.  Disneyland was America’s first theme park and opened in Anaheim, Calif.

THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR began on this day in 1936.  Spain, at the time, was divided into Nationalist and Republican zones.  Nationalists drew support from Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany.  The Nationalists won in 1939.  General Francisco Franco ruled as dictator in Spain until his death in 1975.

EVENTS IN BROOKLYN include a free panel discussion narrated by Heidi Anderson, of ITAC Technology Acceleration, at the Brooklyn Navy Yard today at 6 p.m.  The discussion, Regional Sourcing for Goods in Electronics, is part of the Maker Matters series.  

PROJECT EATS plans to run a farm stand in front of Brooklyn Museum’s glass entrance starting today from 3:30 to 9 p.m.  The event will continue every Thursday throughout the summer and fall.  

SYFY MOVIES WITH A VIEW will screen “Sharknado” and “Phoebe’s Birthday Cheeseburger” at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Harbor View Lawn starting at 6 p.m. tonight.

ON THIS DAY in 1911, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Brooklyn Will Fight for Municipal Building.”  The article focused on a grant that Brooklyn citizens were fighting for that would fund a new Municipal Building.  Brooklynites were planning a campaign borough-wide.  

“Between now and July 27, when the Board of Estimate again will consider the granting of the $500,000 appropriation for the Municipal Building, a borough-wide campaign is to be waged among all the civic organizations, board of trades and taxpayers leagues of Brooklyn…” the article reported.
