City of Water Day comes to Brooklyn Bridge Park

A kayaking event will be held at Brooklyn Bridge Park on July 12 as part of City of Water Day

The Metropolitan Water Alliance’s City of Water Day will make its way to Brooklyn Bridge Park July 12. Kayaking and “Seining the River Wild” are both free, public events that are a part of the annual “celebration of the world-class potential of the water that surrounds us.”

Although the Brooklyn Bridge Park (BBP) offers free public kayaking every Thursday from 5:30-6:45 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the July 12 special event is among the hundreds of City of Water Day activities held along the New York-New Jersey waterfronts throughout the day.

These activities include free ferry rides, boat tours, live music, food fairs and many other on-the-water events promoting clean, accessible and fun waterways, according to the Metropolitan Water Alliance (MWA) website

The kayaking event at the BBP will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Pier 2 floating dock. According to the BBP website, children under 18 must have an adult guardian attend with them, but no experience is necessary for any participants.

The website warns that although you will get to glide along the East River and see the sights like never before, you should prepare to get wet as well!

If kayaking is not your activity of choice, there will also be river seining by the Empire Fulton Ferry in the park. Scientists will use a seining net to humanely catch and release some of the remarkable creatures that dwell in the East River.

This event is from 2-3:30 p.m. and is free with RSVP on the BBP website.

Other events such as the Cardboard Kayak Race and the Pirate Fiesta will take place on Governors Island and at Maxwell Place Park. All events run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
