Warning: Air Quality Health Advisory in effect today until 10 p.m.

There's an air quality advisory in Brooklyn today

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory today from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be higher than an Air Quality Index (AQI) value of 100 for the pollutant of Ozone. The higher the AQI value the greater the health concern, the alert states.

The counties under the advisory include Richmond, Kings, Queens, New York, Bronx, Westchester and Rockland.

According to a meteorologist at the Bureau of Air Quality Surveillance, Ozone levels tend to be lower in the morning hours and gradually increase until peak hours in the midafternoon due to its catalyst being sunlight.

Ozone levels tend to be higher altogether in the summer due to hot and sunny days with little wind activity, the New York State Department of Health website states. According to The Weather Channel, the temperature for today will reach a high of 90 degrees from around 2 to 5 p.m.

The department of health recommends that “individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects,” the advisory states. Further, those who may be greater affected by the high Ozone levels such as young children and those with asthma or heart disease are prompted to consider contacting their physician.
