A disgruntled job applicant opened fire on employees inside a Gowanus iron shop at around 11 a.m. on Monday, June 30, injuring at least two people and triggering a tense stand-off with police that ended about two hours later when the suspect shot himself in the head.

The unnamed gunman reportedly walked into the shop at 13th Street and Hamilton Place asking about a job and was directed by an employee to the manager’s office, said employee Marcos Chantes to the New York Post. The suspect returned to the work floor shortly thereafter, at which point he pulled a gun out and started shooting.

He then sparked a hostage situation by barricading himself inside the shop while police secured the area. Traffic was delayed all along Third Avenue and on nearby cross streets.

Eventually, the gunman turned the gun on himself.

Two people were shot and are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at local hospitals.
