With the summer season approaching, it is important to educate families on the basics of water safety. With this in mind, on Sunday afternoon, May 18, the Swim Strong Foundation hosted classes at Far Rockaway High School and the Brooklyn Sports Club as part of Water Safety Awareness Day for families and children to strengthen their water safety skills.Classes included swim lessons, CPR training and water safety workshops, plus health and nutrition workshops. To add to this day full of events, several community elected officials took to the pool to help out. Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams was among those on hand to participate in the day’s events.Adams noted, Knowing how to swim can help our young people in emergency situations, such as during extreme weather, as well allow them to better enjoy the beach. The borough president also pointed out, “As a part of an island, we’re surrounded by water. We need to understand that people can actually lose their lives by not taking the necessary safety steps.”Shawn Slevin, founder of Swim Strong, is focused on spreading the importance of having common sense and good judgment when it comes to being around water. This city is surrounded by the best beaches and waterfronts which makes it even more important to learn how to swim, she stressed.Swim Strong is not-for-profit organization that relies on volunteers, and has taught 3,600 people thus far.
