Wendy Z. Goldstein, who has served as president and CEO of Lutheran HealthCare in Brooklyn since 2001, is expanding her mission. She has been appointed to the Northeast Region Board of the Arthritis Foundation, the foundation announced on Thursday.

The foundation’s 17-member board provides direction to its programs, advocacy and research in New York State, New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania. Goldstein’s three-year term began on June 11.

“Wendy is an innovator and a passionate advocate for patient care.  Her expertise in developing community-based models for health care delivery will be invaluable in our work to change the lives of people and families coping with all forms of arthritis,” said Andy Crighton, chairman of the Foundation’s Northeast Region Board.

Lutheran HealthCare is the umbrella organization that operates several medical-related entities, including Lutheran Medical Center, the hospital located at 150 55th St., in Sunset Park, as well as family clinics, rehabilitation centers, and senior housing facilities all over southern Brooklyn.

“I am very excited to be joining the Arthritis Foundation board. I look forward to further building the foundation’s base of support to fund cutting-edge research, promote public policies that increase access care, and connect families to the treatment and support they need,” Goldstein said.

The Arthritis Foundation, a leading organization committed to the prevention, control and cure of arthritis, works with families to provide programs and information for sufferers. The foundation advocates for health care policies to improve the lives of the 50 million Americans, including 300,000 children, who live with arthritis. The organization also funds research aimed at developing new treatments.

Goldstein has a long record of service in health care management. Prior to joining Lutheran HealthCare, Goldstein the executive vice president and COO at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center and director and senior vice president at Mount Sinai Hospital. She has also held leadership positions at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and NYU Medical Center.

Goldstein is a member of the boards of the Hospital Association of New York and Lutheran Services of America, chairman-elect of the Greater New York Hospital Association, and a member of the Regional Advisory Board of the American Hospital Association. She is also a fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine.

Goldstein has an MBA from Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Baruch College of CUNY and a BA from Jackson College of Tufts University.

“Arthritis is the nation’s Number One cause of disability,” said Ingrid Montecino, president and CEO of the Arthritis Foundation Northeast. “Wendy has been a champion for quality, coordinated patient care and she will fuel our efforts to ensure access to care for the more than five million people in our region, including 32,000 children, who are living with arthritis.”
