First Lady Chirlane McCray on Thursday updated #FLONYC, her interactive media blog that presents her work as first lady, with a focus on Gun Violence Awareness Month. Last year, more than half of the murders committed in the state were in New York City. Throughout the month of June, New Yorkers can raise awareness and help reduce the incidence of gun violence by participating in events, activities and working groups.

The First Lady filmed video and audio PSAs with Councilmember Jumaane Williams (D-Brooklyn), Deputy Leader, to encourage New Yorkers to participate in Gun Violence Awareness Month. The audio spot will play on radio stations, including Hot 97. The video spot will be featured on NYCTV and additionally promoted online throughout the month.

“Guns have caused so much needless pain and violence in our communities,” said First Lady Chirlane McCray. “We need more voices in the conversation on reducing gun violence, and this begins at the grassroots level. I urge all New Yorkers to take a stand and get involved—there’s too much at stake.”

“As Gun Violence Awareness Month moves forward, I am honored to work with the First Lady of New York City Chirlane McCray to further this initiative to end senseless acts of violence. Her support, along with many other elected officials, will hopefully send a resounding message, raising gun violence awareness throughout the city,” said Councilmember Williams.

“If we all play our part, from government, to community, to the person reading this, we can deal with this gun violence craziness. The mission of the Month is to give everyone in the city an opportunity to engage,” said Williams.
