FASTRACK repairs coming to N, R lines on June 16

Attention subway riders! FASTRACK, the New York City Transit track maintenance program that’s designed to accelerate track repairs so that rush hour riders are not inconvenienced, is coming to the N and R lines starting June 16, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced on Thursday.

For four consecutive nights from Monday, June 16, to early Friday morning, June 20, N trains will be rerouted via the D in both directions between 36th Street and Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue. Regular R service between Forest Hills-71st Avenue in Queens and 36th Street in Brooklyn will end at the regularly scheduled time. 

The repair work will take place from 10 p.m.-5 a.m.

Need travel advice? The MTA offers the following alternatives: 

  • Take free shuttle buses to/from 95th Street, 86th Street, 77th Street, Bay Ridge Avenue, 59th Street, 53rd Street, 45th Street and 36th Street stations. 
  • Take special N shuttle trains to/from N stations between Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue and 8th Avenue.
  • Transfer between free shuttle buses and D, N, or R trains at 36th Street.
  • Transfer between Special N Shuttle trains and D, N trains at 62nd Street-New Utrecht Avenue or Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue.

“Our FASTRACK efforts have been highly successful in repairing and maintaining a subway system that provides a safer work environment for the hundreds of employees working in tunnels and stations to repair and replace components that are vital to providing safe and reliable train service, and an improved station environment our customers,” said Joseph Leader, senior vice president for the Department of Subways.

New York City Transit performed FASTRACK repairs along the Fourth Avenue line in May 2013. Repair and maintenance crews changed light bulbs and replaced rails along a three-mile- long section of the subway between the 36th Street station in Sunset Park and the 95th Street station in Bay Ridge.

Track workers generated 10,678 bags of debris, cleaned 40,360 linear feet of track, replaced 22 tie blocks and installed 594 plates and 20 sections of rails. Workers also inspected 7,000 feet of third rail, serviced 10 switches, inspected and tested 14 public address systems, inspected, cleaned and tested 95 public address system speakers and six customer information screens, the MTA said. 

At the stations, workers repaired 885 linear feet and painted 5,600 linear feet of rubbing board at the platform’s edge, replaced 29 platform signs, 412 tunnel light bulbs, 26 blue emergency light bulbs and primed and painted 15,025 square feet of station surface area.

FASTRACK was introduced in January of 2012 with the goal of devoting four straight weeknights to perform maintenance work in tunnels, stations and on tracks, completely suspending service within a given line segment for a seven-hour period between 10 p.m.-5 a.m., allowing an army of maintenance workers to perform dozens of tasks, according to the MTA.
