On Wednesday, June 18 at 11 a.m., United Photo Industries (UPI) principals Sam Barzilay, Dave Shelley and Laura Roumanos will lead a public tour of the newly installed “THE FENCE,” a 1,000 ft. outdoor photographic installation that stretches along the Greenway from DUMBO at the north end of Brooklyn Bridge Park to Pier 5 at Joralemon Street in the south. The 2014 edition of THE FENCE features the work of 40 photographers who capture the essence of “community,” falling within the categories of HOME, STREETS, PEOPLE, CREATURES and PLAY. Participating photographers will be on hand to discuss their work, along with representatives from Brooklyn Bridge Park (BBP) and sponsors of the project.

THE FENCE first made its debut in 2011 and has since become a very popular attraction, drawing nearly a million visitors to the park annually during it run. Because of this success, UPI has expanded the project to Boston and will unveil the project in Atlanta this July. All three iterations will be on view through October 2014.

Through a series of ambitious public photographic art installations, the enterprising Brooklyn-based art organization United Photo Industries works to champion new directions in photography and cultivate ties within an ever-expanding, international community of photographers. THE FENCE, along with the wildly popular PHOTOVILLE, is one of the group’s signature initiatives. Their work has been featured in Brooklyn throughout DUMBO, Manhattan’s Financial District, Boston (MA), Athens (Greece), Sydney (Australia), Shanghai (China), Cambridge (UK) and Lodz (Poland), with exciting plans for Tokyo in 2015.

Looking ahead, the third annual PHOTOVILLE will take place Sept. 18-28 at BBP’s Pier 5. A crowd-pleasing photo destination, PHOTOVILLE is a pop-up, modular venue built from shipping containers re-purposed into galleries, exhibiting a wide array of cutting-edge photography.

Covering 70,000 sq. ft. in the heart of Brooklyn Bridge Park, PHOTOVILLE will feature a feisty mix of photo exhibitions, outdoor photo installations, lectures, hands-on workshops, night-time multimedia projections and a summer beer garden complete with food vendors, creating a photography destination like no other that is completely free for the public to attend.
