ON THIS DATE IN 1900, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle printed an article titled “Mayor’s Testimony Is Now Under Fire.”
The article refers to Mayor Van Wyck admitting to owning stock in the American Ice Company – Van Wyck previously denied owning stock.  The scandal was that Van Wyck intended on creating an ice monopoly.
“The lawyers who are trying to prove Mayor Van Wyck guilty of conspiring to create an ice monopoly,” the article wrote,” and, to the detriment of the city, secure control of all the docks available for ice business, are trying to establish the fact that Mayor Van Wyck owned other stock than the 5,800 shares to which he testified.”
