More than 40 teachers from public schools in southern Brooklyn were saluted by state Sen. Marty Golden at the lawmaker’s 13th Annual Teacher of the Year awards ceremony recently held in Bay Ridge.

City Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina was on hand to congratulate the winners at the ceremony, which took place in the post theater at the U.S. Army Garrison at Fort Hamilton. District 20 School Superintendent Karina Costantino, and her counterpart, District 21 Superintendent Isabel DiMola, also attended the event.

At least one teacher from each school in Golden’s senate district was honored. Teachers were nominated by their principals or by their peers for the award. Golden (R-C-Bay Ridge-southwest Brooklyn) represents a wide swath of southern Brooklyn, including Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, and parts of Bensonhurst, Gravesend, Gerritsen Beach, Manhattan Beach and Marine Park.

The Dyker Heights Junior High School Band entertained the audience prior to the awards presentation.

Golden said he likes to pay tribute to teachers each year because of their important in the development of children.

In his remarks, the senator praised the work done by teachers. “Each and every day, in each and every school building in our community, all of you gathered in this auditorium today make a difference.  A difference, I might add, that will last a lifetime and affect a generation,” he told the award winners.

“Our children are learning because of you.  Our schools are working because of you. And our future is brighter because of you and all you do each day. Keep up the good work through the end of this school year and in the future,” Golden said.

Golden was called to Albany on legislative business in the middle of the ceremony. His deputy chief of staff, John Quaglione, filled in for him and handed out the awards.
