“WAR ON THE WATERFRONT,” part of the Wednesday Night Tours series, will take place tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Pier 1 Entrance.  The tour will focus on the role Brooklyn’s waterfront played in history, specifically in WWII.  The tour is part of Turnstile Tours.  

NORWEGIAN AUTHOR KARL OVE KNAUSGAARD will be featured in an in conversation with Nicole Krauss today at 7:30 p.m. at The Community Bookstore to discuss his autobiography “My Struggle.”   This is the third volume of Knausgaard’s autobiography and Knausgaard’s only Brooklyn appearance.  Krauss is the author of “The History of Love.”

A RELEASE PARTY FOR TOM ROB SMITH AND MICHAEL KORYTA will take place tonight at 7 p.m. at BookCourt.  This event will additionally serve as a reading, audience Q&A and a book signing.  Smith’s book, “The Farm,” focuses on character Daniel after he receives news that his mother has been imagining things.  Koryta’s book, “Those Who Wish Me Dead,” focuses on a 13 year old who witnesses a murder.

NOTABLE PEOPLE born on this day include Roman opera singer Cecilia Bartoli, who was born in 1966; comedian and actor in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” Russell Brand, who was born in 1975; “Bridget Jones’s Diary” actor James Callis, who was born in 1971; “Jazz” actor Keith David, who was born in 1956; musician Eldra DeBarge, who was born in 1961; “Coming Home” actor Bruce Dern, who was born in 1936; New York City journalist Bettina Gregory, who was born in 1946; former Chicago tennis player Andrea Jaeger, who was born in 1965; and “Tomb Raider” actress Angelina Jolie, who was born in 1975.

BATTLE OF MIDWAY started on this date in 1942 and lasted until June 6.  The Midway battle was one of the most decisive naval battles of WWII.  The Japanese lost four carriers, three destroyers and two cruisers.

THE TIANANMEN SQUARE MASSACRE took place 25 years ago on this date in 1989.  The massacre was the Chinese government’s reaction to student demonstrations for democracy in Beijing.  The troops opened fire on the assembled crowds.  Estimated deaths range from several hundred to several thousand casualties.  Additional demonstrators were jailed.

FREDDY FENDER was born on this date in 1937.  Fender was born in San Benito, Texas, and later was a Grammy-winning musician who played Tex-Mex, country and R&B styles.  He died in 2006.

THE FIRST PULITZER PRIZES WERE AWARDED on this date in 1917.  The prizes awarded were for the biography “Julia Ward Howe,” “With Americans of Past and Present Days,” as well as other journalistic achievements.

FORMER KING OF GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND, George III, was born on this date in 1738.  George III was king from 1760 to 1820 and was later the Kind of Hanover.  He was known for being politically instable, unpopular and was often referred to as “The Mad King.”

TODAY IS THE UNITED NATIONS’ INTERNATIONAL DAY OF INNOCENT CHILDREN VICTIMS OF AGGRESSION.  This day of recognition was created to call attention to the urgent need to protect the rights of children.

ON THIS DATE IN 1901, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “New Bridge Footbridges Completed Amid Shouts.”  The article refers to the East River Bridge construction that was recently completed at the time.  “Workmen on the new East River Bridge engaged in constructing the four footbridges, approaching from the Manhattan and Brooklyn sides,” the article wrote.  “…The workmen met and shook hands amid cheers from their fellows working on the bridge near them.”
