Soldiers strut their stuff on stage at Fort Hamilton

Last year, budget cuts were the cause of the United States Army Soldier Show being a no-show. This year, however, the show returned to showcase the talents of active duty soldiers from throughout the Army on Wednesday, May 28 at the Fort Hamilton Army Base.

The 90-minute, live musical production had two shows, one at 2 p.m. and another at 6:30 p.m. performed at the Fort Hamilton Post Theater. The shows were free and open to the public.

The soldiers in the show were selected during an audition at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, the home of Army Entertainment. The soldiers have a passion for music, dance and performing.

“Stand Strong,” this year’s production, explores the elements of strength and character in today’s Army. The resilience of Army families in the face of adversity was honored in this year’s show. The show also celebrated the families and communities that support their service members.

Fort Hamilton spokesperson Bruce Hill said that every year, the production is great, but this year, the show really focused on the Army issues that have affected soldiers and Army families, and continue to affect them.

“For example, they had John Legend’s song ‘All of Me’ and they used it to express the families’ sadness about losing a loved one overseas and they expressed that very dramatically,” Hill said. “They also addressed the issue of suicide intervention and prevention although the suicide rate has gone down.”
