In a nail-biting, come-from-behind 5-4 victory over Lawrence Woodmere Academy on May 20, the Bay Ridge Prep Varsity Baseball Tigers brought home another championship and a perfect record for their season in Division II of the Private School Athletics Association.

It was a perfect day for a ball game at Coney Island’s MCU Park and the bottom of the final inning brought fans to their feet when a sacrifice fly from Conor McGouran ’14, his second of the game, brought home the tying run to make it a 4-4 game.

Lawrence Woodmere then opted to walk Gabriel Bassil ’15, who proved to be unstoppable at bat all season, and load the bases with just one out for Bay Ridge Prep. Next up was Stephen Scala ’14 whose walk-off single brought in the winning run and a 5-4 final score to give the Tigers not only the championship win but the first perfect season for any team in Bay Ridge Prep Athletics history.

Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach Tony Campbell attributed the big win to the consistency the team built and maintained all season and said that the momentum carried us into the playoffs and a championship finish with a perfect record.

Baseball Coach Lou Rossi added, These students really exemplify what teamwork is about. You don’t go undefeated without the desire and the drive they displayed all season.

Four players were honored by the PSAA on the field following the game. Scala was named MVP of the championship game. Scala, Bassil, Will Carley ’14, and McGouran, were named All-Conference by the league. At a previous Bay Ridge Prep sports awards ceremony on May 16, all four student-athletes were also named baseball MVPs for the season by the Athletics Department.

This marks the second league championship title for Bay Ridge Prep Varsity Baseball, with the first being in 2008. The Tigers were also named Regular Season Division II Baseball Champions at the end of the 2012 season.
