Borough President Adams leads delegation to China to sign sister city agreements

With the largest Chinese-born population in the country, Brooklyn is a natural choice to be a “sister city” with China’s cities Yiwu and the Chaoyang district of Beijing. Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams agrees. That is why he and Deputy BBP Diana Reyna are leading a delegation of small business owners and local Chinese-American leaders to visit Chinese cities, schools and other tourism/economy-related stops between May 22 and June 1.

The group’s goal is to “affirm our borough’s valued place on the global stage [and as a] partner for economic trade, cultural exchange and so much more,” said Adams, referring to economic development and tourism ties between the two populations.

Adams said he is also hopeful that the trip will engender goodwill towards the plan to bring a “friendship arch” to Eighth Avenue in Sunset Park—the hub of Brooklyn’s Chinatown.

The trip comes as local officials express support for an official Lunar New Year school holiday for city schoolchildren. May is also Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
