UPDATE: Bay Ridge husband charged in wife’s murder
Husband tried to commit suicide after attack
A Bay Ridge man who allegedly stabbed his wife to death during an argument in their apartment, slashed their 14-year-old son, and then stabbed himself in an unsuccessful suicide attempt early Tuesday morning, has been charged with murder.
Hasan Rugova, 52, was charged with second degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon, assault, and endangering the welfare of a child.
The fatal incident took place shortly after 2 a.m. on May 20 inside the couple’s apartment at 101 Marine Avenue, according to police.
The wife, 46-year-old Guitenna Rugova, who had been stabbed in the neck, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 52-year-old husband and the 14-year-old son were rushed to Lutheran Medical Center. Both were listed in stable condition.
As the criminal charges against Rugova were announced, new details about the murder-attempted suicide came to light.
The New York Daily News reported that the couple’s 14-year-old son stepped in and prevented his father from committing suicide.
On Wednesday, Bay Ridge residents were still in shock over the deadly incident, a full day after they had time to absorb the shocking news.
It’s not clear when the Rugovas were arguing about when Husan allegedly attacked his wife with a butcher knife.
Here’s what is known: Police responded to a 911 call of an assault taking place in the second floor apartment and arrived at house at around 2:21 a.m. They found Guitenna Rugova with a stab wound to the neck. EMS responded to the scene and pronounced the woman dead. Husan Rugova and the couple’s son were also inside the apartment – the husband had a stab wound in the stomach, apparently from the suicide attempt – the son, whose name was not released by police, had a slash wound on his right forearm.
CBS 2 News reported that the couple was about to open a new pizzeria in Bay Ridge. The pizzeria, located on Fourth Avenue and 91st Street, was called Sammy’s Pizzeria, according to the Daily News. Sammy is Husan Rugova’s nickname.
A neighbor told reporter Glenn Schuck of 1010 WINS News that the late victim was loved and respected by everyone in the building. “Everybody loved her,” the woman told 1010 WINS.
The 68th Precinct Community Council issued a statement calling on the public to “join us by keeping the three children and the extended family in your thoughts as they go through this terrible time.”
Police said the investigation into the tragic incident is ongoing.
