Brooklyn Bridge Park announces 2014 summer lineup of free events

The Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy (BBPC) and Brooklyn Bridge Park (BBP) are kicking off summer with an exciting array of free events, offering to visitors unique cultural, educational and recreational activities, as well as expanded opportunities to volunteer and support the world-class waterfront park.
The summer season officially kicked off earlier this month with Celebrate Brooklyn! Bridge Dance Parties, presented in partnership with BRIC. Long-time audience favorite Syfy Movies With A View, along with the Books Beneath the Bridge reading series, Metropolitan Opera, Jazzmobile with special guest Arturo O’Farrill, the World Science Festival, Photoville and DUMBO Arts Festival will all return to the park this summer.
Along with returning favorites, Brooklyn Bridge Park will host more free events that will engage visitors across a wide spectrum of interests. Expanded arts programming will include Shakespeare at Sunset performances by Brooklyn-based Renegade Performance Group and Theater 20/20, a new exhibition of Vietnamese artist Danh Vo presented by the Public Art Fund, a visit from the Barolosolo Cirkus Company, a new outdoor screening and festival with BAMcinemaFest and John Street Pasture, a temporary living earthwork that celebrates green space, agriculture, and the transitional nature of urban land in the John Street section of the park, which is currently under construction.
Also included on the roster are new family activities including Pier Kids, a weekly celebration of arts, singing, dancing and performance at Pier 6, and more fitness classes for all ages including Adult and Teen Volleyball Clinics, the Conservancy Soccer League, Crossfit with Dumbo Crossfit, Senior Fitness with Dodge YMCA and free skating sessions at the newly opened Pier 2 roller rink. In fact, visitors will have more opportunities for recreation at the Pier 5 soccer fields, the Pier 2 courts and at the much-loved Pop-Up Pool at Pier 2. As a result, the park will be hosting regular family field days to welcome families to all recreational piers.
A revamped Wednesday Night Tours series will highlight the history, ecology and design of Brooklyn Bridge Park. Special ecology workshops for children will be presented throughout the summer, and the volunteer Green Team Series will continue to offer park lovers an opportunity to learn about gardening, enjoy nature and make the park look its best. Additional volunteer opportunities will be offered throughout the summer for those who want to pitch in.
Brooklyn Bridge Park and the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy are also unveiling a new and improved website, which will act as a digital tour guide to enhance visitors’ experiences and will make visitor information and stories more easily available through an interactive map and other features.
