Getting ready for this Saturday’s “Bike the Branches” in Brooklyn? The Brooklyn Public Library and the NYC Department of Transportation are pairing up on Tuesday, May 13 from 4:30-6 p.m. to give away free bicycle helmets at BPL’s Central branch, at 10 Grand Army Plaza.

Free helmets will be available while supplies last, according to BPL.

There is still time to register for May 17’s Bike the Branches, a fun one-day bike ride where you can discover Brooklyn and support BPL. It includes readings by local authors, workshops and activities for kids and adults, and a variety of themed rides, from “Where’s Waldo” to “Landmarks of Brooklyn.”

Set your own pace and follow one of BPL’s suggested routes, curated by the Brooklyn Collection, or create one yourself. Walkers and runners are welcome, too.

Registration is $20 for adults, $10 for children 17 and under and seniors 65 and up, $40 for families (which includes up to two adults and three children), and $150 for teams of up to 10 people. In addition, this year’s participants can register as a BKLYN Trailblazer for $100.

All proceeds from Bike the Branches help fund Brooklyn Public Library’s work to bring services, resources and programs to Brooklyn neighborhoods. Bike the Branches is supported in part by Zipcar, Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc and Bloomberg.
