Bright sunshine and blooming flowers marked the late start of spring just in time for the 12th annual Asian Pacific Heritage Festival on Sunday, May 4 in Dyker Heights’ P.S. 176 schoolyard, where hundreds of Brooklyn’s Asian American families gathered for dancing, martial arts demonstrations, painting, games, food and more.

“Millions of Americans trace their origins to nations in the Asian/Pacific region and they enrich Brooklyn, New York and our nation,” said State Senator Marty Golden, who hosts the event each year. “I look forward to hosting this annual event that recognizes the many important contributions that Asian/Pacific Americans have made to our community,”

In addition to the family-friendly festivities, the event also served as a way to honor local community advocates Timmy Moy and Viccy Cheuk, who were presented with Distinguished Citizen awards by Golden.

Representatives from numerous community groups were also on hand to provide health and educational information to residents. Co-sponsors included the U.S. Better Chinatown Association, Chinese American Partnership, New Utrecht High School, Homecrest Community Service, Maimonides Hospital, Methodist Hospital Asian Service Center, and several local businesses and dance studios.
