Today at 11 a.m. BP Adams will host “Verdict of Brooklyn,” a wine and beer tasting event in the Brooklyn Borough Hall Courtroom that will highlight a distinguished panel of critics in a blind tasting. Local restaurants will be serving food at the event. … On Saturday, from noon to 4 p.m. the North Brooklyn Boat Club is welcoming spring with a free public paddling event. They’re offering free kayaking and canoeing, and safety gear will be free as well. The event is happening in the Broadway Stages Boatyard in Greenpoint. … The Brooklyn Community Chorus’s spring concert “Brooklyn On My Mind” is happening Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Bay Ridge.

Leonardo da Vinci died on this day in 1519. The Italian artist, scientist and inventor and painter of the famed “Last Supper,” perhaps the first painting of  the High Renaissance, and of the “Mona Lisa.” Inventor of the first parachute. Born in Vinci, Italy, in 1452, he died in Amboise, France.

Berlin Surrendered on this day in 1945. Soviet marshal Georgi Zhukov accepted the surrender of Berlin, the German capital. The victory came at a terrible cost for the Red Army, with 304,887 men killed, wounded or missing (10 percent of its soldiers). About 125,000 Berliners died in the siege, many by suicide.

The King James Bible was published on this day in 1611. King James I appointed a committee of scholars to produce a new translation of the bible in English. This version, popularly called the King James Version, is known in England as the authorized version.

On this day in 1898 the Brooklyn Eagle published a list of prices of the paper: A month of the Eagle cost one dollar. Six months cost $4.50, and one year cost $8. The Sunday Eagle cost $1.50 for a full year’s subscription.

In 1898 on this day the Spanish American war was just beginning (it started on April 25). Of the war, the Eagle wrote that it so far had “been an evasion rather than invasion of Cuba” but not to “lose patience” as the “boys in blue” would be there soon. The paper also stated that Americans should “take comfort” for the “American people never yet engaged in a war that they did not win.” They also noted that the “business of spitting on the Spanish colors, using them for door mats and all that sort of thing is childish, and the authorities…do right to reprehend it.
