Fontbonne Varsity hits some mid-season speed bumps

After Fontbonnes Varsity softball team took over first place in the Queens Catholic High School AA Division last week, the team hit some speed bumps after getting off to a quick start.

The Bonnies lost their second and third games of the season to the Mary Lewis Academy and St. Francis Prep respectively, to bring them to a 6-3 league record. Although they lost two close games in a row, the Bonnies came back to win a non-league tournament game, beating St. Joseph by the Sea this past Sunday.

April 23 vs. Mary Lewis Academy MLA 3, FHA 2

Although she struck out 13 batters during the game, Nicollette Trapani gave up two back-to-back home runs in the top of the seventh inning to surrender a 3-2 lead to the Mary Lewis Academy.

Decidedly not out of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, Marie Gentile and Delania Allegretti both singled and advanced to scoring positions on a wild pitch. Christina Calasciones following grounder was turned into an out when Gentile attempted to force the tying run at the plate.

With runners on first and second, the Bonnies squandered their last change to salvage the game when Julia Schalk struck out and Natalie Lacognata flied out to end the game.

April 25 @ St. Francis Prep SFP 2, FHA 0

In what would be Fontbonnes third loss and first shutout of the season, the Bonnies just couldnt get any offense mounted against one of the leagues top teams. Although she finished with 10 strikeouts, giving up two runs on one walk and two hits in the second inning, Fontbonnes top hurler, Trapani (4-3) took her third loss of the season.

April 27 @ St. Joseph by the Sea – FHA 4, Sea 0

After two close losses, Fontbonne answered an invitation to participate in a non-league tournament for Cancer Awareness in Staten Island. Drawing one of the tougher teams on the island, the Bonnies put the two recent losses behind them and displayed some offense as Jill Nixon tripled and Schalk smacked a home run.

Bianca Marletta registered six strikeouts while only giving up one hit over six innings, while Trapani finished in relief, holding Sea scoreless through the ninth inning.
